Pathfinder: Kingmaker

Consolidating the Borders
Ark 4

With things starting to settle down, Arlon wanted to prepare Ausvedania for growth. The first order of business was exploring some parts of the land they had aquired when Varnhold joined them. He took Yevan, Sir Eluwak and Korbar Swordbreaker. Edmund remained behind, to busy with item creation and other work for what seemed like a mundane task.

First, they found the Cascades of the Shrike River. The great waterfall meant that water traffic would have to stop at that point, but it also provided a scenic view that people would come from far to view. Continuing into the mountains they encountered a group of ettercaps attempting to ambush them. Arlon exterminated them with a single flamestrike and they forgot the encounter as quick as it had begun. They then begun a descent back towards the low lands so as to explore some of the southern border. They spotted a giant bird in the distance, and Arlon wondered if it might not be a roc.

Exploring the hills was fairly uneventful. They did have some luck, though, when they discovered a small hole in the ground that led to a cave of gems. They made note of it with the intent of starting a mine there in the near future. Far more important though, they spotted a giant eagle. Arlon called out to the avian who landed to converse with them. He revealed his name was Content Not Found: lalio. Arlon impressed him with his manners and rhetoric, as well as promises to respect the territory of him and other eagles. They parted on good terms. As they headed back towards Beornholm they encountered a rogue chimera. Aside from some wounds to Korbar, the beast was swiftly defeated.

On there return, Arlon started supervising further work on the city and castle. Korbar was more focused on securing the new holdings on Candlemere. Eluwak had a smaller scale idea, but one just as dear to his heart. He and his wife planned to open an inn.

Arc 3: The Varnhold Vanishing

With the summer season came a lot of requests on the party. The most prominent included Jemanda Orlashen of Oppara’s Kitaredian Academy is looking for Professor Ervil Pendrad who was heading towards Varnhold, Edrist Hanvaki wanted his brother found, and Tamerack Elenark who was seeking Iobarian artifacts. The party started to explore north and east along the South Rostland Road towards these aims. They found Fort Serenko abandoned. While they were in Nivakta’s Crossing a messenger from Rostland intercepted them. The Sword Lords asking that they investigate the settlement of Varnhold. They had lost contact with it and wished to know what had happened. They continued on and found the body of Tomin Hanvaki and collected his broach to return to his brother.

The party arrived in Varnhold to find it abbandoned. As they explored, Arlon was attacked by a feral hog the size of a dire boar and killed it. Crossing the Kiravoy River that ran through town they were attacked by a Chuul and dispatched it. They found ominous signs in the form of centaur hides being tanned on a fence and the word NOMEN carved into a door. In the inn they found strange things such as a dead sprigan and Professor Pendrad’s notes. At the temple of Erastil they found a stash of scrolls that Arlon took custody of. They found a hungry cat and Arlon used magic to speak with it, but learned little. However, the cat indicated that centaurs had not taken the townspeople. They also found a folding boat and took it. Eventaully they came upon a group of sprigans and killed them. Among the treasures was a magnificent bow that Sir Eluwak claimed.

With nothing more to find, the party headed back towards Austvedania. Passing through the mountains they found a roc’s nest. They took two eggs, one for the omelet competition in Olegton and the other to raise. They set about improving on their kingdom. A reserve was formed where Tiressia and Falchos live. They also built an aviary to see to the raising of their new roc. They sent word of their findings to Restov. Restov then asked the party to make peace with the Nomen Centaurs.

The party trekked back to the Nomen Hights. It was a rough journey. They were beset by spiders and nearly killed by a bullete. However, they finally encountered the Nomen centaurs. They were escorted back to the centaur camp and were able to earn their trust by presenting them with Skybolt, the bow that Sir Eluwak had claimed. He was not pleased to part with the prized weapon, but returned it to its rightful owners. They were presented to the tribe’s leader, Aecora Silverfire. Arlon was somewhat put off by the matriarchal nature of the centaurs, but could understand their reasons, as peculiar as it all seemed to him. They discussed the disappearance of Varnhold and what could have happened. They mentioned clues they had found, including the name ’’Vordakai." Aecora told the Valley of the Dead and how she believed it was the tomb of an ancient warlord called Vordakai. She also told them, in some distress, that her daughter Xumanthe had gone to investigate the tomb. The party promised to search for her as they left to investigate.

The journey proved quite eventful. A bull mastodon attacked them and ended up providing them with dinner. As they neared the valley, Arlon spotted a strange bird following them. He wildshaped into an eagle to chase after it. He captured the raven, only to have it violently die from an unknown source. Edmund believed it was a spellcaster’s familiar that had been spying on them. As they entered the valley they were attacked by a cyclopse zombie that they destroyed. Far more fearsome was a souleater that attacked them, though it was no match. The final opstical was crossing a river to an island. They made use of the folding boat they had found. A pair of wyrverns attacked, and after defeating them Arlon harvested their venom.

Making their way inside of a cave on the island they found ancient cyclopse gold and a jade bracelet like that mentioned in Pendrod’s notes. They were confronted by yet more cyclopse zombies. A fight with an elmasmosaurus started to make them wish they had prepared waterbreathing spells. When they next were trapped in a flooding trap room fighting cyclopse zombies that was reinforced. They made it to a safe hallway to camp out and rest. The next day Arlon prepared a few spells to help if they ran into more water.

The refreshed party continued to explore. They found a door that would require a blood sacrifice to open, but passed on it for the time being. An encounter with a pair of soul eaters was nearly the end of Sir Eluwak. They took rubbings of a cyclopse fresco. They came to a room they could not open for the time being and so they returned to the one that would require a blood sacrifice. Eluwak was willing to provide for that. Beyond that they found a piscodaemon waiting. They told him they were sent by Vordakai and he let them past. They found Xumanthe in the next room, beaten and parlized. They gave her a ring of freedom of movement to free her for the time being. After she told them of her capture they confronted the daemon. It was a tough fight because they did not have blessed blades to aid in slaying him.

They continued on to find the source of all the evil they had faced. An undead wizard left them hagard and they were forced to rest after destroying him. They found the bodies of the leadership of Varnhold with their brains torn out. A spectre troubled them shortly before they put it to rest. They left Xumanthe in the feasthall as they moved deeper. They faced down a greater water elemental that guarded the way to their target. Entering a dark throne room they found the anchient cyclopse litch Vordakai. He was tough foe to face, arogant in his power. However, the party was more powerful and destroyed the foul creature. Among his treasures they found soul jars containing the inhabitants of Varnhold, including Professor Pendrag.

They escorted Xumanthe back to her tribe. Aecora was so happy that to see her daughter and happy to hear that the blight had been destroyed that she made the party members of the tribe. As part of the celebration she presented Skybolt to Sir Eluwak to keep. Arlon was able to make peace between the centaurs and humans. The party freed the people of Varnhold after returning them to their town. The people swore to join Austvedania once roads could be built to connect them to the rest of the nation.

The party continued to explore the area around Varnhold before returning. They swung up to Restov to sell some treasure and makes some purchases then started exploring south. They found an ancient mummy in a mud pit that turned out to valuable because of nutrients in the soil. They spent some time fishing for eels that Edmund teleported back to Olegton where a cookoff was being held. They found a cave with iron veins that would be good wealth when they expanded to it. A giant flytrap on a small island was nearly Arlon‘s undoing. They helped a phase spider, zamas to remove xill from her territory. They talked to the Nomen’s about where to find manticores and were pointed to their burial mounds where a trio stalked. They slew the beasts and took their spines for quils.

The party finally returned to Beornholm to focus on growing their nation. They started to slowly expand towards Varnhold. One of Arlon‘s first points of business was to knight Sir Eluwak. He also introduce the party to his new bodyguard, Yevan and some other new members of his entourage. Arlon was saddened to learn that the roc egg they had found was not fertilized and would not hatch. After some prodding, Sir Eluwak finally asked Lily to marry him and they planned a spring wedding. Arlon visited the hermit boggard Garuum with an offer of friendship and to let him know that they would be expanding towards his territory. Garum was less interested in joining Austvedani than returning home, but could not do that. He did offer a reward for the chief of the boggard tribes head though. A spy was found, put on trial, and executed. Adding Varnhold greatly increased Austvedai’s size. As they worked to adjust to the newly added land, Arlon went to Candlemere and consecrated the ground with a hallow spell to negate the curse around it. With the curse suppressed, they could begin building a new city there.

Arc 1: Stolen Land

The party, led by Arlon, arrived at Oleg’s Trading Post after being chartered to explore and map the Stolen Lands. They met Oleg and his wife, Svetlana. They found that the two were being extorted by local bandits. The party set up an ambush and took down the bandits without much trouble. They also learned of a woman named Krestal that was leading a larger band and that they were all under a bandit king named the Stag Lord.

The day after the party took care of the initial bandit problem a man named Kesten arrived with a small group of mercenaries to help defend Oleg’s trading post. He had been dispatched from Rostland. He asked the party to keep an eye out a robber named Falgorm Sneed. A day later a priest of Erastil by the name of Jhod arrived. Him and Arlon developed a quick friendship based on mutual faith. As well, Oleg asked the party to try and find Svetlana’s stolen wedding ring.

The party continued to explore the Narlmarches. They found radishes for Svetlana and a trapper under a deadfall, killed by his own trap apparently. At a temple they were chased away by an enraged bear. Later they were able to kill the infamous boar, Tuskgutter. They befriended a hermit named Bokken

Eventually the party came across a clan of mites. They ended up rescuing a kolbold named Mikmek. Mikmek asked them to take a statue back to his tribe in hopes of freeing them from the rule of the tribes shaman. The party accompanied him back and gave the statue to Chief Sootscale to destroy. The party then confronted the shaman, Tartuk and killed him. Along with the friendship of the Sootscale tribe, the party was able to recover Svetlana’s ring.

The party continued to explore. They met a friendly hunter named Paul who shared some rabbits with them for dinner. They harvested fang berries for Content Not Found: booken. There was a quick encounter with some spiders. A fairy dragon warned them of a bridge that was unsafe. They freed a slerk from a pit trap, most likely left by the irresponsible hunter they found dead in his own trap. They were surprised to be attacked by giant frogs at a lake.

On a return to Oleg’s Trading Post, Jhod confided to Arlon that he had been defrocked for causing the death of an innocent man. However, he had been given visions of a temple in the woods guarded by a cursed bear. Arlon told him that they had encountered a bear like that a while back and promised to break the curse. The party returned to the temple and slew the bear, they were much better prepared this time and took him down without casualty.

They continued to explore. They met a boggard named Garum. While it nearly came to blows, they were able to make peace with him, he just wanted left alone. They killed two tazelwyrms at a river crossing and took the heads for Oleg. They also found a map to help them explore, though they had explored most places it mentioned. They were saddened to find a unicorn corpse with the horn cut off. They made a cairn for it. They found a barbarian cairn. Most of the party did not want to loot the graves, but Edmund took a ring of swimming from one. A group of wandering grigs camped with them for a night. They said that some pranks the party experienced a while back might have been by their cousin Titurtut.

Returning to the trading post they found that the Sword Lords had tasked them with slaying the Stag Lord, the bandit king of the Greenbelt. The party started to hunt for Stag Lord. They encountered one of his victims, or what was left of him while trying to cross a river. The undead Davik Nettle demanded the body of the Stag Lord before he would let his crossing be used.

The party found the Stag Lord’s fort and snuck in. That did require a fight with some zombies. Once inside they faced down his minions. A man named Akiros turned on the other bandits. The party was mistrustful of him at first, but it became apparent that he loathed the bandits and wished to make up for his time with them. As well, they were able to capture Sneeg for Kesten.

They found the Stag Lord and his pet owlbear. It was a ferocious battle. The party and akios were nearly overcome. However, working together they prevailed over the Stag Lord. Accompanied by Akiros they tossed the Stag Lord’s body into Nettle’s Crossing and used his head as proof of his death. The Sword Lords rewarded the party with a charter to start a new barrony.

Arlon readily accepts the title of baron while appointing the other party members along with others they have met into other leadership roles. The party spends the next year claiming lands. The first thing they do is turn Oleg’s Trading Post into the center of their first town, Olegton. They had ups and downs through the process. There was a scandal involving Thosys and a farmer’s daughter. They had an economic boon when Arlon’s choice of clothing became a trend in Brevoy. Towards the end of the first year there was a zombie plague, but they quickly put that down. There was an attempt on Edmund’s life for a past slight to a noble, but the party was able to save him. There last action for that year was to found their capital at the site of the Stag Lord’s fort. They named the capital Beornholm.

Arc 2: Rivers Run Red

With a year of kingdom building under their belt, the party set out to do more exploring and have some adventure. They helped one of the rare thylecene out of a hole. They had also had an unfortunate encounter with a barghest that attacked their camp one night. Following that they came upon a delicate situation.

Melianse the nixie had charmed several loggers after they cut down trees near her pond. This, not unreasonably, angered the Corax, the leader of the loggers. After cooling tempers the party said that they would see that the trees were replaced if Melinanse released the loggers and told them where to find suitable lumber.

Hoping to get some tree tokens, the party sought out a nearby dryad. They discovered that Tiressia and her consort, Falchos, were under threat from a scythe tree. They readily tracked the vicious plant down and slew it. They were able to return with the tokens to Melinanse. This resulted in them earning the friendship of all the fey involved.

They also had the misfortune to run into Bokken‘s brother. He was an evil hermit. They were forced to kill him. However, they were able to return their mother’s ring to Bokken. They also found a map that claimed to lead to treasure.

When they returned to Beornholm they discovered that there had been several brutal murders. A maid named Saki and a Shepard boy named Brevan had been killed. The party investigated until they had narrowed the likely suspects down to a kelid named Kundal. They waited outside the inn he was at until he emerged, transformed as a werewolf. They were able to subdue him, though barely. They took him to Jhod who helped cure him of the condition he was not even aware of. This also helped make up for Jhod’s past mistake. Kundal was quite grateful for being saved from his curse and was happy to join the barony’s leadership as a headsman and problem solver.

The party listened to a few rumors for possible adventures and ways to help their kingdom grow or trouble that was brewing. Sir Eluwak was approached by Lily who was hoping he might find her some fine elven artwork. They slew the white worg, Howl-of-the-North-Wind and his pack of wolves. Arlon struck the killing blow and so took the pelt to make a cloak. They followed the treasure map they had found to a barrow mound. After slaying the restless dead they found an excellent sword for Eluwak. The party explored a lake and made their way out to Candlemere Keep. Arlon cast diminish plants to get rid of the thorny overgrowth. They managed to fight off a will-o-wisp, but were forced to retreat till they had more forces to fully clear it out.

They came across a strange hut. There they met the swamp witch Old Belledame. She was cranky, but politeness won her over. She told the party that she would buy any black cap mushrooms they found. They found a good patch of the mushrooms guarded by a tendriculos. They defeated it and got a good hall of mushrooms thanks to Arlon casting plant growth a few times. Belledame was happy to have the mushrooms. After talking to her a few more times, Arlon convinced her to move to Beornholm and set up a shop where she would be safe from bandits.

The party continued to explore. It was bonding time for them and they talked over their campfires. As they explored along the waterways they were lured into trap by a lecaoute, but killed the tricky monster. Content Not Found: arlong found himself a good suit of blue dragonhide armor.

The party focused on growing their kingdom yet more. A local artist had created a small boom in growth when his artwork ended up in demand. Trouble came though when a man named Grigori started trying to stir the populace against its leaders. The party and the other leaders showed a unified front and Arlon tried to make a counter speach to agianst Grigori. It was to no avail, but Edmund determined that Grigori was using magic to influence the crowd. They arrested Grigori and put him on trial and he was convicted. Arlon gave him an opportunity to be pardoned, but he could not give the name of who had sent him. He was executed for treason.

Arlon had signet rings topped with amber they found on one of their adventurs made for the party members that would act as a spell focus. They listened to many rumors of places to explore. However, the one that caught their attention was a missing boy named Tig. They set out immediately to find him.

The party encountered Jubilost and his gnomes while searching for Tig. His wagons were falling in a river, but the party was able to help rescue them. He could not provide them any information on Tig, but did offer to sell them some maps which they purchased to help them explore. They got maps marked: hodag den, king of the forest, and elven keep.

The party encountered a pack of trolls. It was a hard battle that nearly resulted in their death, but they slew all of the ravenous giants. This lent credit to the rumors of trolls plagueing the south.

The party came at last to the camp of the lizardfolk tribe. They discovered that the boy Tig was being held their and tormented. Most of the tribe was not happy with this, finding the unnecessary suffering distasteful, but they were ordered too by the chief and the ancestor spirit he followed. The party confronted the chief and named his spirit a will-o-wisp. After a hard fight they killed the lizard king and his spirit. The tribe then swore allegiance to Arlon. They then returned Tig to his family.

The party started out again to deal with rumors and quests. They killed the giant snapping turtle Old Crackjaw. Arlon struck the killing blow and took the shell to hang on the castle wall. They followed the map to the old elven keep which was inhabbited by wicked fey. The Dancing Lady charmed Sir Eluwak and that was nearly the end of the party, but Arlon was able to bring her down. Unfortunately the quickling was able to escape. Eluwak took an elven statue back to Lily and was rewarded with her affections and a magic cloak. They hunted down the hodag and Arlon took the spear that was logged in its hide. A hungry pack of wolves tried to make a meal of them, but they killed a few and ran some off. The party encountered the lone hill giant Munguk and were able to calm him after Eluwak offered him some spirits. Arlon convinced the giant to come back with them to Beornholm despite some protests from the others. The giant was happy to work for food and alcohol though and put under the care of Belledame to keep him out of trouble.

The party returned to Beornholm to do some nation building. Content Not Found: roy approached the council about building a new town where the party had slain a pair of tazylwyrms. Arlon agreed, eager to expand their boarders and influence. Bad news came when Chief Sootscale brought reports of a possible cult of Gyrona. The party investigated several suspects then set kolbold spies to watch them. When one revealed herself they tracked her to the meeting of the other cultists and killed them all.

The party finally set out to deal with the troll menace. Along the way they were able to kill the forest drake that had plagued the area. Jhod and some soldiers formed a fall back point while the party entered and fought the trolls. Thosys was nearly killed by the troll leader, but Arlon struck down the monster. The party’s victory was short lived for when the returned they found that Olegton had nearly been wiped out by a rampaging giant owlbear. After seeing to aid and rescue the party set off to track down the beast. Arlon was determined to protect his people. They found the owlbear in its lair and killed it, Arlon landing the killing blow. The remains in the cave suggested that some bandits were trying to train the owlbear for their own end. They found a owlbear chick among the remains of the owlbear’s family and Arlon opted to adopt it and raise it. They named it Scrag.

They returned to Beornholm with the intent of managing the kingdom for the winter. Tragety struck when Thosys was assassinated. Arlon and Sir Eluwak tracked down and killed the assassin personally. Arlon has since charged Chief Sootscale with finding out who hired the assassin. They build a tribue to their fallen comrad in Olegton. They started to work on building two new towns. A dwarf named Korbar Swordbreaker picked a fight with Sir Eluwak in a bar and it was up to Arlon to break it up. Eluwak held no grudge though and sponsored Korbar to be the new marshal. Work was completed on Eraville and Nimsai. When the stage actor McHail Paxon passed through it was good publicity combind with a good growing season for the kingdom. Arlon had long eyed Candlemere Keep as a place to build at. He gathered together the party, Jhod, Kundal, and Content Not Found: Akiros to go and clear out the will-o-wisps. They succeeded at that, but found that a curse still held over the place and would not be fit for colonization until they found a way to deal with it.
